Have you ever laughed out loud while reading the Bible?
With my stomach still growling after dinner tonight, I did just that, laughed out loud!
Matthew 4:2 “After He (Jesus) had fasted 40 days and 40 nights He was hungry.”
Ok stop right there. Laughing commence!
It was only after the 40 days that you are saying he was hungry!? Forty!? Well, that is proof enough for this food lover to be persuaded that Jesus is Lord!
I don’t think hungry would be the word you would use for me. It would have to be more like, out of my mind starving and on the verge of dyeing!
Clearly, it is fair to say that Jesus was a little more than “hungry” too!
Next comes verse 3, “Then the tempter approached Him and said, “If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
Notice the first word is “then”. How long had Satan been lurching in the shadows while Jesus prayed. What was he waiting for and what made him decide to move then? Was Satan so calculated and methodical that he knew the perfect time to act on his devious plans?
Could it be that Jesus was at his lowest? That Satan thought he saw a weak moment and then pounced?
Yes! Satan attacks at our weakest moment my friend! He doesn’t play by the mercy rule. When life has got us at our most vulnerable, that’s when he makes his move. There is no greater joy for him than when he makes one of Jesus’ sheep fall! He is out to still, kill, and destroy! (John 10:10)
He tempted Jesus with a thought he (Satan) already had himself, yet Jesus mustard up whatever strength he had left and, with dry, cracked, and horse voice, strained to say, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Three times Satan tries to destroy Jesus, and three times Jesus refuses Satan with the Sword of God’s Word. “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Heb.4:12
May we be like Jesus when Satan attacks!
Run to the truth of The Word. Don’t give up! Satan isn’t the only one who knows our every weakness. Jesus knows, and He is there along side you! “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet he did not sin.” Heb 4:10
God isn’t just watching you like a hovering parent waiting to see if you will make the right choice, he says in Isaiah 41:13 “For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.”
He is there my friend, holding your hand and helping you! How can Satan stand up to that! The God of the universe and you, hand in hand, fighting Satan word for word with His piercing sword!
I pray that you find hope today and strength to press through whatever struggle you are facing. That you turn to His word and proclaim the truth and watch the tempter flee like the scum bag he truly is!
Love in Him,
