Put a Pin In It!
The other evening, I was watching the Disney movie “Bolt” with my grandchildren. It was an enjoyable movie of a little girl named Penny and her love for her dog, Blot. We were laughing and really getting into the movie but, several times a scene came up that I found quite annoying.
The movie producer was having a conversation with Penny when she asked a question that he apparently did want to deal with. So, he says, “How about if we just put a pin in it”. Meaning let’s just table this discussion and come back to it later, which of course, he has no intention of doing.
After the second or third time that phrase was used, I caught myself bristling and wanting to punch that guy.
To my knowledge I have never spoken those words to anyone. However, it occurred to me, that even though I don’t use the words, I do in fact say the same thing to my Heavenly Father. I will be reading scripture and suddenly, I’ll think, “I don’t want to go there! Let’s come back to that later.” Then, I’ll either turn to a different passage or put my Bible down and move on to something else.
Other times I’ll be listening to a sermon and as God’s truth is spoken, I’ll intentionally divert my thoughts somewhere else, so as not to deal with the truth. In those moments I’m saying to God, I don’t want to address this sin in my life, so how about we just put a pin in it!
Have you ever done that? Have you avoided dealing with God on a subject in hope He will forget about it and not bring it up again? God loves us far too much for that to happen.
James 4:17 ESV says, “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.”
God brings truth into our lives, not for us to avoid it, but for us to obey it.
Jeremiah 7:23 ESV, tell us, “But this command I gave them: ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. And walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.”
Obedience is hard. Avoidance is easy. God’s love for us compels us to obey Him, and our love for Him should result in obedience.
Don’t put a pin in it, pursue Christ today....
